The authors of the recently released book on Justice Brennan, Seth Stern and Stephen Wermiel, have started a new blog called The Brennan Blog. I look at my blog as a highly specialized one, but that takes it to another level. I think it's a great idea.
Last week, they had a post about the Carney nomination. The post focuses on the questions that Senator Coburn asked Carney to answer. According to the blog, Coburn had "Brennan on the Brain." They state:
During the 1980s, Reagan Administration officials held up Justice Brennan as the archetype of who they wanted to keep off the bench as they went about selecting judicial nominees.
Not much has changed a quarter century later, if the written questions submitted by Senator Tom Coburn, R-Kansas (my edit: sic: he's actually from Oklahoma), to one pending nominee are any indication.
Notably, Coburn specifically referenced Brennan in one of his questions.
The post also notes that the writer (Stern) attended Carney's hearing and there was not a lot of Republican antagonism towards Carney. Nevertheless, he does not expect Carney to be confirmed any time soon.
