Now, this is getting silly.
Right wing organizations have begun to use Chatigny's nomination in commercials to try and attack Democratic Senators.
For example, according to this article, a "libertarian think tank," a.k.a. a nutty right-wing organization, has funded television ads in Nevada asking Reid to block the nomination.
Here's Reid's response:
Due to Republicans' unprecedented obstructionism of all of the president's judicial nominees, Sen. Reid has not yet had an opportunity to vote on Judge Chatigny's nomination or on any of the 15 judges whose nominations are pending ahead of his. If his nomination is allowed to come to the floor, Sen. Reid will consider Judge Chatigny's full record in deciding whether to vote to confirm him.
If I was a voter in Nevada, I would be scratching my head. Why would I care about a nomination to a court that covers New York, Connecticut and Vermont? I know that the right-wing has been making a coordinated attack on Chatigny with the hope that just mentioning the name will act as a dog whistle to their followers. But I can't imagine that, even with the onslaught of fevered rhetoric across the right-wing, that people in Nevada would care at all about this.
But the right has not stopped with Nevada. They have done a similar thing in Vermont. According to the same article, this organization has run commercials in Vermont using the Chatigny nomination to attack Senator Pat Leahy. According to the commercial, Leahy took the inhuman step of defending Chatigny, saying that he had been "unfairly smeared." How dare he say that! Doesn't he realize that all good moral people know that Chatigny is evil! He loves sexual sadist serial killers!
Who knows? Maybe the rightwing has an effective strategy here. Maybe I am just being way too reality-based in finding the whole thing silly.
If the nomination ever does reach the floor of the Senate, I guess it will get even sillier.
